FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rex Ryan gathered his three quarterbacks Wednesday morning and told them he had made up his mind.

He's sticking with Mark Sanchez.

The New York Jets coach spent two days weighing his options after benching Sanchez last Sunday against Arizona, talking to as many people within the organization as he could before settling on his quarterback.

"I have to get this decision right," Ryan said, "and I believe I have."

So, it will be Sanchez and not Greg McElroy or Tim Tebow on Sunday when the Jets take on the Jaguars in Jacksonville.

"It's really a decision I feel great about," Ryan said.

Sanchez was pulled late in the third quarter against Arizona, and McElroy came in and led the Jets to the only touchdown of the game on his first NFL drive and helped New York to a 7-6 victory. Sanchez was 10 of 21 for 97 and three interceptions, while McElroy was 5 of 7 for 29 yards and the score, and appeared to spark the team.

Including, the Jets hope, Sanchez.

"When I looked at everything, the biggest thing I kept coming back to is, who gives us the best opportunity to win?" Ryan said. "When I kept coming back to that, I believe the correct answer was Mark Sanchez."

It was perhaps the biggest call in Ryan's nearly four years as coach, considering the sensitivity of the situation and the possible ramifications. He acknowledged that there were differing opinions among those he spoke to, but said he received no pressure from owner Woody Johnson and added that he was "absolutely" OK with the decision.

"I'm fortunate," he said. "I have a great relationship with my owner, with Woody. ... From the day Mr. Johnson hired me, he said it's 100 percent my decision who plays."

Sanchez, whose confidence was shaken with Sunday's miserable performance, gets a chance to bounce back from the first benching of his NFL career and to regain the trust of his teammates. He has struggled the last several weeks, with two touchdowns and five interceptions in his last four games.

"He has to play better and he has to protect the ball better," Ryan said. "As a football team, we have to protect the ball better than we have."

He'll likely be on a short leash against Jacksonville ? with McElroy possibly ready to go ? but Ryan acknowledged that it might not be a quick hook if he struggles. But he also referenced the team's color-coded system which determined how much risk Sanchez can take with each pass, saying the quarterback is now back in the "red light" area ? meaning he must be extremely cautious.

"If he throws one interception, it doesn't mean he's going to get benched, necessarily," Ryan said.

It's still uncertain if Tebow will be active against his hometown Jaguars after sustaining two broken ribs. He was medically cleared by team doctors to play, but Ryan chose to keep him active but not play against New England on Thanksgiving night and then made him inactive against Arizona.

If Ryan went with McElroy, a seventh-round pick in 2011 out of Alabama, it would have been a clear message that the franchise is moving on from Sanchez.

"I'll just keep working, go study this film and keep trying to improve," Sanchez said Sunday after the game. "I need to understand where the mistakes came from, keep studying, keep preparing, be ready to play next week and see what happens."

However, money might have played a role, too, with Sanchez owed $8.25 million next year in guarantees, but Ryan adamantly denied that factored into the decision.

"Absolutely zero," he said without hesitating.

Still, the Jets are likely stuck with Sanchez and his contract, so they need to see if he can rebound after the lowest point of his career.

"I believe in Mark," Ryan said.

If Sanchez can't bounce back, it will be an intriguing offseason for New York, especially since Tebow has not played much since being acquired from Denver in March and might not be back next year.

It didn't appear that Tebow was much of a factor in Ryan's decision. Ryan said all three quarterbacks would be in the mix, but didn't speculate as to whether he would have pulled Sanchez in favor of Tebow last Sunday if he were active.

Tebow was expected to have a major role in the offense, but instead has been just a spare part averaging about seven offensive snaps per game. He has been listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, but if the Jets turned to McElroy, it would have meant that the No. 3 guy leapfrogged Tebow to start for the Jets.

The fact the team is playing on the road for the next two games should also help Sanchez. He was booed mercilessly by the MetLife Stadium crowd last Sunday, particularly after each interception, and chants for McElroy were heard throughout the game. McElroy was cheered as he warmed up late in the third quarter, and there was growing sentiment among some fans and media that he earned a start after lifting the team.

"This is my opinion," Ryan said, "and I believe that sometimes you don't need to sit a guy for 'X' amount of games."

Sanchez was deemed the face of the franchise when they traded up in the draft in 2009 and took him with the fifth overall pick. He helped lead New York to consecutive trips to the AFC championship game for the first time in team history and there were comparisons to Joe Namath, but it has been a bumpy ride since. Sanchez has been criticized the last two seasons for failing to take the next step in his development, and Ryan has been knocked for sticking with the quarterback for too long.

The two have been joined at the hip, and stand side-by-side during the national anthem before every game. Ryan was seen in the locker room consoling Sanchez after the game, his arm on his shoulder as the two spoke for a few minutes. Until last Sunday, the threat of being benched ? even with Tebow on the roster ? didn't appear to be a real possibility.

Now, Ryan has sent the message to Sanchez: Perform or else. And, Sanchez gets one more shot to save his job this season ? and his status as the Jets' franchise quarterback.

"I think Mark is plenty tough," Ryan said. "I don't think there's any doubt he has the mental toughness."

Policy brief for copyright reform released, entitled: "Three Myths ...

Open source software licenses and copyright law have a complex relationship. People often say that open source turns copyright on its head and loosely refer to open source licenses as "copyleft" licenses. Indeed, the idea of a license that grants perpetual rights to copy, modify, and distribute a work?and requires licensees to attach the same terms to any downstream work?certainly feels like the antithesis of copyright law's protectionist character.

Yet open source licenses (in their current forms) rely on copyright law. Copyright law supplies the bundle of statutory rights that empower the ?keep it open? requirement of an open source license. Without copyright law, an author would have to find another legal theory to prevent others from, for example, taking a developer's code and hiding it behind technological walls. And what do you sue for when someone violates the terms of an open source license? Copyright infringement (among other things).

Clearly, copyright law matters to the open source community, and so copyright reform also matters. Enter a mid-November now-you-see-it-now-you-don?t policy brief from staff of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), an independent research organization for over 160 Republicans in the House of Representatives. The brief, titled "Three Myths about Copyright Law and Where to Start to Fix it," embraced sweeping copyright reform to cheers from the technology community and elsewhere?only to be withdrawn the next day, to a chorus of jeers. (Examples below.)?

Summary of RSC brief

Myth #1: "The purpose of copyright is to compensate the creator of the content." Noting copyright's stated purpose in the U.S. Constitution?"to promote the Progress of Science and the useful Arts"?the brief argues that the current copyright regime focuses too greatly on the compensation of content creators and not enough on the broader goal to promote content innovation and productivity.

Myth #2: "Copyright is free market capitalism at work." The brief argues that copyright law "violates nearly every tenet of laissez faire capitalism" because it is fundamentally a system of subsidized monopolies granted by the federal government.

Myth #3: "The current copyright legal regime leads to the greatest innovation and productivity." According to the brief, our current copyright regime fails in this regard because it has become excessive in its legal protections and the time over which those protections apply, thus encouraging rent-seeking more than innovation.

The brief then notes the current copyright term?life of the author plus 70 years, and for works authored by corporations, 120 years from creation or 95 years from publication?and contrasts that with the first U.S. copyright law, which was passed near the time of the framing of the Constitution and provided for 14 years of protection, renewable once for another 14 years. The ever-lengthening copyright term, the brief argues, stifles innovation by discouraging value-added content creation. And here the brief is at its most provocative, opening its list of the copyright-stifled with the "DJ/Remix industry" (getting or buying permissions from record companies is too prohibitive) and following on with a discussion of how copyright?s protections thwart scientific study (too many papers in "locked vaults"), prevent the creation of vast digital public libraries (few modern works in the public domain), block new industries from ever blooming (such as a "pop-up" layered annotations of existing media), and obstruct journalistic oversight (incriminating documents claimed protected by copyright).

The solutions proposed by the brief will be familiar to copyright reform-minded folks: reform (read: reduce) available statutory damages for copyright infringement, clarify and expand on fair use of copyrighted materials, sanction those who make false copyright infringement claims, and "heavily" reduce the copyright term while allowing for only disincentivized renewals. The last of these gets a more detailed treatment: a suggestion to slash the copyright term to an initial term of 12 years for new works, with renewals available for consecutive periods of 12, 6, 6, and 10 years at increasing fees based on the work's generation of revenue.

The brief ends with a clarifying acknowledgment that some copyright protection is warranted, coupled with a striking quote: "Current copyright law does not merely distort some markets?rather it destroys entire markets."

If any of the ideas or proposals in the brief were to be embraced in earnest, and were to lead to real legislative reform, what could this mean for open source? It?s hard to say?one could imagine, for example, that if the copyright term were greatly reduced, companies could see a viable business model in waiting for the expiration of copyright on some open source licensed components, assembling the components into a complete offering, and locking it in binary-only form?and if this happened on a huge scale, open source's hereditary nature could be deprecated, even with the original components remaining in the public domain. But this feels like a stretch. All in all, the brief certainly appears to fall on the side of openness, and that's probably a good thing. One can only hope that the brief's release has opened a new dialogue about copyright reform and that its awkward retraction isn't effective at closing that dialogue down.

Almost one in three (31%) adults say the government should ban all medical research experiments on animals, according to a poll.

The poll, on indications of public attitudes to animal testing, was commissioned for BBC Radio 5 Live.

Some 70% say scientists should be able to use mice to research conditions like diabetes or Alzheimer's.

ComRes interviewed 1,000 adults by telephone between 30 November and 2 December 2012.

The findings of the ComRes telephone poll suggest that people's views on the use of animals for medical experiments vary, depending on which animals are involved.

More than half of those questioned (56%) said they were more comfortable with the use of mice for research into diseases than they were with the use of cats, dogs and monkeys.

Mice are used by scientists to research causes and treatment of various diseases, due to the similarity of their genetic make-up to that of humans.

Legal licences

The latest Home Office figures show that nearly 3.7 million (3,685,127) animals were experimented on in UK labs in 2011, of which nearly 2.7 million (2,663,441) were mice.

The remaining million were mainly other rodents, birds and fish, but included 153 cats, 2,865 dogs and 1,459 monkeys.

Animal testing for medical research can only be carried out if appropriate licences have been granted by the Home Office, when certain criteria are met.

The use of animals in scientific procedures is regulated by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, which requires three licences - one for the person doing the research, one for the location and one for the project.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? A medical sensor that attaches to the skin like a temporary tattoo could make it easier for doctors to detect metabolic problems in patients and for coaches to fine-tune athletes' training routines. And the entire sensor comes in a thin, flexible package shaped like a smiley face.

"We wanted a design that could conceal the electrodes," says Vinci Hung, a PhD candidate in the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences at UTSC, who helped create the new sensor. "We also wanted to showcase the variety of designs that can be accomplished with this fabrication technique."

The new tattoo-based solid-contact ion-selective electrode (ISE) is made using standard screen printing techniques and commercially available transfer tattoo paper, the same kind of paper that usually carries tattoos of Spiderman or Disney princesses. In the case of the sensor, the "eyes" function as the working and reference electrodes, and the "ears" are contacts for a measurement device to connect to.

Hung contributed to the work while in the lab of Joseph Wang, a distinguished professor at the University of California San Diego. She worked there for six months earlier this year under the Michael Smith Foreign Study supplement from NSERC.

"It was a wonderful opportunity," Hung said. She worked directly with Wang, who is well-known for his innovations in the field of nanoengineering and is a pioneer in biosensor technology.

The sensor she helped make can detect changes in the skin's pH levels in response to metabolic stress from exertion. Similar devices, called ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), are already used by medical researchers and athletic trainers. They can give clues to underlying metabolic diseases such as Addison's disease, or simply signal whether an athlete is fatigued or dehydrated during training. The devices are also useful in the cosmetics industry for monitoring skin secretions.

But existing devices can be bulky, or hard to keep adhered to sweating skin. The new tattoo-based sensor stayed in place during tests, and continued to work even when the people wearing them were exercising and sweating extensively. The tattoos were applied in a similar way to regular transfer tattoos, right down to using a paper towel soaked in warm water to remove the base paper.

To make the sensors, Hung and her colleagues used a standard screen printer to lay down consecutive layers of silver, carbon fiber-modified carbon and insulator inks, followed by electropolymerization of aniline to complete the sensing surface.

By using different sensing materials, the tattoos can also be modified to detect other components of sweat, such as sodium, potassium or magnesium, all of which are of potential interest to researchers in medicine and cosmetology.

Egypt's top court shuts down, blames protesters

CAIRO (Reuters) - Protests by Islamists allied to President Mohamed Mursi forced Egypt's highest court to adjourn its work indefinitely on Sunday, intensifying a conflict between some of the country's top judges and the head of state.

The Supreme Constitutional Court said it would not convene until its judges could operate without "psychological and material pressure", saying protesters had stopped the judges from reaching the building.

Several hundred Mursi supporters had protested outside the court through the night ahead of a session expected to examine the legality of parliament's upper house and the assembly that drafted a new constitution, both of them Islamist-controlled.

The cases have cast a legal shadow over Mursi's efforts to chart a way out of a crisis ignited by a November 22 decree that temporarily expanded his powers and led to nationwide protests against him and his Muslim Brotherhood group.

The court's decision to suspend its activities appeared unlikely to have any immediate impact on Mursi's drive to get the new constitution passed in a national referendum on December 15.

Judges supervise voting in Egypt, and Mursi will need them to oversee the referendum.

But in a blow to the president, an influential body representing judges decided on Sunday not to oversee the vote, the state news agency reported. The Judges' Club's decisions are not binding on members, however.

Vice President Mahmoud Mekky said on Sunday he was confident the judges would perform that role, despite calls by Mursi's critics in the judiciary for a boycott.

Three people have been killed and hundreds wounded in protests and counter-demonstrations over Mursi's decree.

At least 200,000 of Mursi's supporters attended a rally at Cairo University on Saturday. His opponents are staging an open-ended sit-in in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cradle of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

The National Salvation Front, an alliance of liberal, leftist and socialist opposition groups, called for protests in Tahrir Square on Tuesday against Mursi holding the referendum on what it branded an "illegitimate constitution".

Mursi and the Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled him to power in a June election, hope to end the crisis by pushing through the new constitution hastily adopted by the drafting assembly on Friday. The next day the assembly handed the text to Mursi, who called the referendum and urged Egyptians to vote.

"The Muslim Brotherhood is determined to go ahead with its own plans regardless of everybody else. There is no compromise on the horizon," said Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at Cairo University.

DEEP SUSPICION

Outside the Supreme Constitutional Court, Muslim Brotherhood supporters rallied behind the referendum date. "Yes to the constitution," said a banner held aloft by one protester. Chants demanded the "purging of the judiciary".

The interior minister told the head of the court that the building was accessible and that the protests were peaceful, according a statement from the ministry.

The protest reflected the deep suspicion harbored by Egypt's Islamists towards a court they see as a vestige of the Mubarak era. The same court ruled in June to dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood-led lower house of parliament.

Since then, several legal cases have challenged the legitimacy of the upper house of parliament and the 100-member constituent assembly that wrote the constitution.

Those against the upper house have focused on the legality of the law by which it was elected, while the constitutional assembly has faced a raft of court cases alleging that the way it was picked was illegal.

Mursi believes securing approval for the new constitution in a popular referendum will bury all arguments on the legality of the constituent assembly, as well as controversy over the text it worked through the night to finish on Friday.

It will also override the November 22 decree that drew concern from Western governments and a rebellion by sections of the judiciary. The decree shielded Mursi from judicial oversight.

While the Islamists' critics, including representatives of the Christian minority, have accused the Brotherhood of trying to hijack the constitution, investors appear to have seen Mursi's moves as a harbinger of stability. They were also relieved that Saturday's mass Islamist protest went off calmly.

The main stock market index, which lost a tenth of its value in response to Mursi's November 22 decree, rallied more than 2 percent when the market opened on Sunday.

"The events that took place through the weekend, from the approval of the final draft of the constitution and the president calling a referendum, gave some confidence to investors that political stability is on track," said Mohamed Radwan of Pharos Securities, an Egyptian brokerage.

OPPOSITION INFURIATED

But opposition parties have been infuriated by what they see as the Brotherhood's attempt to ram through a constitution that does not enjoy national consensus. Mursi's opponents warn of deeper polarization ahead.

Liberal figures, including former Arab League chief Amr Moussa, pulled out of the constituent assembly last month, as did Christian representatives.

The draft constitution contains Islamist-flavored language which opponents say could be used to whittle away human rights and stifle criticism. It forbids blasphemy and "insults to any person", does not explicitly uphold women's rights and demands respect for "religion, traditions and family values".

New York-based Human Rights Watch said the draft constitution protected some rights while undermining others.

The text limits presidents to two four-year terms, requires parliamentary approval for their choice of prime minister, and introduces some civilian oversight of the military - although not enough for critics. Mubarak ruled for three decades.

Mursi described it as a constitution that fulfilled the goals of the revolution that ended Mubarak's rule. "Let everyone -- those who agree and those who disagree -- go to the referendum to have their say," he said.

The Islamists are gambling that they will be able to secure a "Yes" vote by mobilizing their core support base.

Growing up I could read before I ever started school. It was not that I was taught to read it was simply that I picked it up somehow. I would steal my older brother?s books and keep trying the words until I finally figured them out. By the fifth grade I had read War and Peace twice. In my home this was normal and we never thought anything of it. My father was gifted and so was his siblings. My younger brother also was gifted but in different?areas.

When you homeschool how can you tell if your child is gifted??Many experts believe only 3 to 5 percent of the population is gifted, though some estimates ?can reach 20%. Only 1/10% are what ?is called profoundly gifted which means they are the rare prodigies who devour complex texts before kindergarten or play a violin sonata. ?The trouble is there is no universal standard to define being gifted. There is a national standard used called Javits Act.

41 states have set their own definitions of being gifted and you can contact the school board int eh area you live in to have your child tested. Teaching a gifted child is much more a challenge because he or she may actually prove to be above your?abilities. I spent years?arguing?with teachers only to prove them wrong about whatever it was. I was asked to never return to several classes for that reason and my dad was asked never to attend a conference because he once told a teacher her job was to teach and not give an A on paper with?punctuation?errors. I never got an A again from that teacher!

Did you know that a central bank can lease gold? What does gold leasing mean?

A good way to answer this question is to give a simple theoretical example. Let's say the Austrian government has some gold. It goes to the central bank of England and deposits some of its gold. So London now has some Austrian gold sitting in its bank vaults.

Now what happens if England comes up with a brilliant idea. It says to Austria, what if I make a deal with you. I will lend (or lease) your gold to someone else,- let's say China. What I mean by lend is that England allows China to borrow the gold. In return for the right to borrow the gold, China pays England a fee. So China now has possession of the Austrian gold. In return for borrowing the gold it gives England a fee. So the Austrian gold is now shipped out of England and given to a Chinese vault. So the Austrian gold is now in Chinese hands which it will supposedly return to England. England gets from China an IOU from China saying that China will promise to return the gold someday to England. Until that time for return comes, China also promises to pay England a leasing fee. This is very much like a person who leases a car from a car dealer. The car dealer leases the vehicle to the person. The person pays a monthly leasing fee to? give them the right to have the leased vehicle.

So what are the potential problems with this gold leasing program A problem can arise when for example if England decides to sell the Austrian gold and has in its vault without the permission of Austria. Lets say they do this so as to surpress the price of gold. By selling an inordinate amount of gold on the market when it is not supposed to be available it increases the supply of gold in the market. When the supply increases and there are the amount of buyers or demand, then the price of gold decreases artificially.

Much of this type of gold leasing occurs in the London Bullion Market(LBM).? The London Bullion Market is a type of over the counter in which there is little or no transparency. This means that a buyer can buy a large amount of gold from the LBM with hardly anyone knowing. This type of gold leasing or buying is often called Gold Carry Trading.

New blow for Rice: Moderate senator voices concern

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A moderate Republican senator, vital to any White House hopes of getting U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice confirmed as secretary of state, said Wednesday she couldn't back any nomination until more questions are answered about the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya and Rice's State Department role during the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombing in Kenya.

In a fresh suggestion of eroding GOP support for Rice, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine emerged from a 90-minute, closed-door meeting with the ambassador voicing new criticism of her initial account about Libya. Collins also questioned what Rice, the assistant secretary of state for African Affairs in the Clinton administration, knew about requests for enhanced embassy security before the Nairobi truck bombing.

Pressed on how she would vote if President Barack Obama names Rice to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Collins said, "I would need to have additional information before I could support her nomination."

At the White House, Obama called Rice "extraordinary" and said he couldn't be prouder of the job she has done as U.N. ambassador. Cabinet members joined Obama in applauding Rice, who attended the meeting. Obama has not named a replacement for Clinton, who has said she intends to step down soon.

The misgivings from Collins, the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, came one day after three other GOP senators said they would try to block Rice's nomination. Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire said they were more troubled than ever by Rice's answers on Libya even though the ambassador conceded that her much-maligned first explanation was wrong.

In an unusual move, Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell have held two days of private meetings with Republican senators in hopes of assuaging their concerns. Privately, Senate Republicans said they had hoped the conversations would quiet the criticism as they want to avoid the spectacle of a postelection challenge to a female African-American nominee.

Instead, the sessions have cast further doubt on her chances for the top State Department job and increased the likelihood of a protracted fight if Obama does choose her. Although Democrats will have 55 votes in the next Congress, the president would need the support of five Republicans to avoid a filibuster of the nomination.

Collins said she was troubled by Rice's "political role" in downplaying the Libya attack as a spontaneous demonstration over an anti-Muslim video rather than a terrorist attack by al-Qaida affiliates in a series of Sunday talk show appearances on Sept. 16 ? five days after the attack and weeks before the election.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the raid on the U.S. diplomatic mission.

Rice has said she was relying on talking points provided by U.S. intelligence.

Introducing another issue certain to be fodder for any confirmation battle, Collins said she pressed Rice about security at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in 1998 when a truck bomb was set off outside the facility, killing more than 200 Kenyans and 12 Americans.

"What troubles me so much is the Benghazi attack in many ways echoes the attacks on those embassies in 1998 when Susan Rice was head of the African region for our State Department," Collins told reporters after the meeting. "In both cases, the ambassador begged for additional security."

Collins said Rice told her she was not involved directly in turning down the request for improved security. The Maine senator said that in light of Rice's position, she had to be aware of the general threats and U.S. Ambassador Prudence Bushnell's requests for security upgrades in Kenya.

Review boards headed by former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, Adm. William J. Crowe after the Aug. 7, 1998, bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania did not find reasonable cause that any U.S. employee breached his duty in connecting with the bombings. Rice was not blamed.

However, Crowe said the boards believed there was a "collective failure" by several administrations and Congress over a decade to invest adequately to shore up vulnerable U.S. diplomatic missions around the world.

Rice has emerged as the front-runner for the top job at State though Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., passed over for the job in 2008, is considered a strong alternative.

In a clear message to the White House, Collins said Kerry would have no problem winning Senate confirmation.

"I think John Kerry be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues," Collins said.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, was more circumspect about Rice's chances after his own meeting with the ambassador.

The GOP senator suggested that Obama "take a deep breath and nominate the person he really believes is the very best person for secretary of state, regardless of relationships."

Corker, who traveled to Libya in early October, was highly critical of the administration and the intelligence community, saying that "the whole issue of Benghazi has been a tawdry affair."

Democrats have rallied to defend Rice, casting the Republican criticism as political scapegoating.

"You know it's a shame to create a sideshow that seems, I think, very clearly to be very political out of something that really has no bearing on what happened in Benghazi," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the House Intelligence Committee, called the criticism a "transparent attempt" to deny Obama a potential Cabinet choice.

The issue remained at the forefront as the Senate, in debating a defense policy bill, approved an amendment by McCain that would lead to an increase of up to 1,000 Marine Corps personnel to provide security at U.S. diplomatic missions around the world.

Diabetes is a manageable disease

After a family backpacking trip a couple weeks later, he weighed 66.

"It came on pretty quickly," said Gildon, now 28, reflecting on what led up to his eventual diagnosis: diabetes.

He's among the 26 million people in the United States with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, which acknowledges November as American Diabetes Month.

The recently published Diabetes Report Card 2012 from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) listed Oklahoma as having had the highest increase in adult diabetes from 1995 to 2010, with nearly one in 10 Oklahomans having the disease.

Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose, or blood sugar, the CDC's report explained. With diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use its own insulin effectively.

Glucose builds up in the blood and causes a condition that, if not controlled, can lead to serious health complications and even death, the report said.

At the time he was diagnosed, Gildon wasn't familiar with diabetes.

On the way home from that aforementioned backpacking trip, Gildon kept asking his parents to make pit stops every 20 or 30 minutes. He was also thirsty.

Eventually, he started feeling bad. After the family made it home, their physician said Gildon might have flu, then wrote him a prescription.

That evening, he became sicker still, and couldn't keep water or Sprite down. That's when his mother took him to the emergency room.

A normal glucose level is in the 80-100 range, Gildon said. That night in the hospital, his hit 999.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes can be subtle and increase over time, said Dr. Laura J. Chalmers with the Harold Hamm Oklahoma Diabetes Center at the University of Oklahoma, 4444 E. 41 St.

Those signs include being more thirsty, urinating more often, waking at night to drink and go to the bathroom, and weight loss, Chalmers said. The appetite may also be increased, and some people will have nausea and vomiting.

Gildon was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, or type 1 diabetes (T1D), one of the three most common forms of diabetes, according to the CDC. Another, type 2 diabetes (T2D), makes up for about 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes in adults; the third, gestational diabetes, develops and is diagnosed as a result of pregnancy in 2 to 10 percent of pregnant women.

With T1D, the body is unable to produce insulin, a hormone secreted by pancreas to regulate blood sugar, Chalmers explained. Treatment for T1D is insulin.

In T2D, there is insulin resistance, she continued. Treatment for T2D involves weight loss, dietary changes and medications that help the body secrete insulin and overcome the insulin resistance. In some situations, patients with T2D require insulin.

Onset of T1D is typically before age 20 but presentable from approximately 6 months of age into adulthood, Chalmers said.

Annette Jones was 24 and pregnant with her youngest daughter when she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

"When women get gestational, it usually goes away after delivery," said Jones, alluding to the 2 percent of women who remain diabetic after pregnancy.

Jones has had diabetes for 27 years, more than half her life. Like Gildon, she wasn't too familiar with diabetes, other than having family members who were diabetic - but she was too young to understand what that meant.

"I knew there was not a cure and that you had to take shots," she said.

Lori Maisch was 45 when she was diagnosed with T1D. She had lost 25 pounds from May to September that year - "all the yard work I had been doing," she thought.

Constantly thirsty and going to the bathroom every 15 minutes, even at night, Maisch finally attracted the attention of someone in a doctor's office: her neighbor, who noticed her "sweet odor."

"It's the same scent I smell on patients that have diabetes," Maisch recalled her neighbor saying. "That prompted me to make an appointment with my primary care physician, be tested and diagnosed."

More than one diabetes

Misconceptions abound regarding diabetes, Chalmers said.

For example, T1D is treated with insulin and carbohydrate counting, she explained. Patients with T1D should have a healthy diet but are allowed to have cake, ice cream and other sweets within reason - as long as they take their insulin to cover the carbohydrates in the food they consume.

Maisch used to be one of those folks with preconceived notions about diabetes, she said. Since her diagnosis, people assume she has T2D because she's an adult.

"Then they say, 'I thought that only happened to children,' " she said. "Some will say, 'Oh, if you eat right and exercise more, you can control it.' No, that's type 2 - I am insulin-dependent."

Or she might have people tell her she can't have certain foods, like birthday cake, refusing to cut her a slice because "you can't have it," Maisch said. "I just need to adjust my insulin to eat it."

Most people don't know that there is more than one kind of diabetes, Jones said. Others she's met don't think that it's a big deal because diabetics take insulin.

"They don't realize the deadly consequences that occur with this disease," she said. "I have actually had people say to me, 'You have diabetes? You're not even fat.' I could go on and on."

Sometimes, people with diabetes might have a change in mood, experiencing "highs and lows," as Maisch said.

"If I am having either, I can come across irritable or out of it," she said. "I don't mean to but can't help it sometimes. I've found a lot of people don't understand that part of the disease."

Having diabetes can be expensive, too. Even with insurance, the two insulin shots Maisch needs each month are $100 each. Plus, she has test strips and syringes to buy. In all, it's about $400 out of her own pocket each month.

"I used to be more impulsive," Maisch said, "but now am more mindful regarding my meals and making sure I have my T1 pouch - blood glucose monitor, test strips, glucose tablets, insulin, syringe - every time I leave the house."

It takes planning

Another challenge is always having to be more prepared than the average person.

Like if a buddy of his asks him to go on a spur-of-the-moment bike ride, Gildon has to know what his blood sugar is, possibly take extra food with him in case he takes too much insulin or exercises too heavily.

If he goes on a long trip, he has to think ahead in case his insulin pump breaks - what would he do then? Gildon has to have a back-up plan.

When he'd go on a Boy Scout camping trip, Gildon and his dad crafted a case out of PVC pipe for his insulin so he could keep it in his sleeping bag on freezing nights - and insulin doesn't freeze.

One of the main challenges for Jones was changing her eating habits, like cutting back on carbs.

"Simplicity is gone," she said. "I can't go anywhere - store, work, park, ride my bike - without a plan, a snack or juice, something to treat low blood sugar."

Jones has to have her blood monitor with her at all times, and she checks her blood at least four, sometimes eight times a day.

Like Gildon, she wears a pump 24-7. "It is still better than six to seven shots a day," Jones said - but added, "I don't feel free."

Such adjustments aside, a normal, active life is achievable for most diabetics.

Jones wanted to have another baby after her second daughter, but the doctor said it was "probably best" she didn't.

"This was 27 years ago, so that mentality has changed now," said Jones, who has three beautiful daughters.

"God worked everything out," she said. "Maybe not the way I had planned it, but just perfect anyway."

Stop diabetes before it starts

American Diabetes Month takes place each November in order to raise awareness of this disease.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), it is estimated that nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

To stop this disease before it starts:

Get moving. Physical activity lowers blood sugar and boosts your sensitivity to insulin. Research shows both aerobic exercise and resistance training can help control diabetes. The ADA recommends a half-hour of mild aerobic activity five times per week.

Eat more whole grains. White bread, white rice and potatoes have a high glycemic index, which can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Whole grain foods help with diabetes prevention because they slow down carb absorption.

Limit your sugar intake. Be sure to read nutritional labels and steer clear of anything that lists sugar, sucrose, corn syrup or other sweeteners, such as evaporated cane juice or molasses, as one of the first ingredients.

Stop smoking. According to a Harvard School of Public Health study, smokers are about 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers. New research shows that inhaling secondhand smoke may also lead to an increased risk of diabetes.

Get more sleep. Not getting enough sleep increases hunger, which leads to weight gain and, therefore, raises your risk of getting diabetes.

Check your glucose levels. The ADA recommends blood glucose screening for everyone age 45 and older. Generally, this testing is repeated every three years. But if you have known risk factors (like high blood pressure or obesity), discuss them with your doctor.

Support for diabetes

After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and not having a support system in place, Lori Maisch went into action.

She looked at the American Diabetes Association, JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and local support groups.

"I found that there were great meetings for type 2 (diabetes), for children with type 1, but none specifically for adults with type 1," Maisch said.

So she formed a group called T1Tulsa for adults older than 18 living with type 1 diabetes. They meet once a month. Sometimes they have speakers; sometimes they just visit and learn from one another.

"It is a special meeting for me, as it is the one time month I can look around the room, say anything, and everyone gets it," she said.
